In order to circumvent existing trade barriers, the Completely- Knocked-Down (CKD) strategy has prevailed in the automotive industry. Instead of an export of fully built up they were exported decomposed to the markets and assembled locally there. Objective of "CKDCHAIN" is the transfer of this concept to companies of mechanical engineering by developing a simulation-based configuration support.

Objective of this research project is firstly the development of a simulation-based configuration support, which supports the defintion of the shipping structure from the product structure and the design of the CKD-supply chains (supply strategy, CKD location expression) considering the demand model. On the other hand, ideal-typical forms of CKD modules will be defined.

In particular, international competitors pressurize SMEs in mechanical engineering increasingly. In order to still maintain competitiveness and to improve, they must enter regional markets. Similar to the automotive industry, these markets are often protected with tariff and non-tariff trade-barriers and the companies are forced to localize a part of their value adding in these regions. The CKD / SKD strategy enables companies to meet these requirements despite uncertain sales figures react to without having to invest heavily in manufacturing facilities or build local suppliers. The targeted configuration support should allow SMEs a systematic planning of the necessary CKD supply chains and simultaneously worked up the requirements for CKD-design of assemblies.

The design support as a central research result will consist of a morphological feature schema for the description of ideal-typical CKD components and a simulation-based method for the design of CKD supply chain.
