Energy-efficient and safe communication network for the internet of energy

The target of the research project "eSafeNet" was the investigation, conception and demonstration of an innovative information technology communication approach for the internet of energy. Basically, potentials of a dedicated communication infrastructure were analyzed considering mobile communication as main technology and tethered transmission technology, e. g. powerline, so that safety relevant structures for stability, reliability and safety meet the requirements. To guarantee the economic efficiency, a service platform was designed which provides safety relevant and additional smart services by service providers.

Germany wants to increase the share of renewable energy sources in total electricity generation up to 80 % by 2050. During this transition significant technical and operative challenges occur continuously. A future smart grid has to provide a safe and reliable communication network while guaranteeing the security of supply, so that the mentioned requirements are met - especially considering the feed-in of fluctuating green energy.

The project eSafeNet is supposed to address that problem. First, a scenario-based choice and the test arrangement of a dedicated, safe communication network took place which at most connects all market participants (e.g. producers, consumers, storages, e-cars, etc.) intelligently by using safe and reliable transmission technologies for a broad mass of data (e.g. by smart meters).

Additionally, based on the analyzed data and an innovative business model a smart service platform was established, creating a sustainable additional value on the side of consumers as well as producers.

By use of this two-stage concept, the current transition in the energy sector was supported specifically so that the mentioned target was not only just achieved, but also realized efficiently in an overall economic context.
