Seit 1970, als ich als studentische Hilfskraft im FIR e. V. eintrat, habe ich das Privileg, das FIR an der RWTH Aachen zu be- gleiten. Es waren damals mehrere Aspekte, die mich für die Arbeit am FIR begeisterten, aber der wohl wichtigste war die von jeher gelebte Praxisnähe des Instituts. Das FIR war nie nur ein im Wissenschaftshimmel die Harfen spielendes „Symphonieorchester“, sondern immer auch eine mit beiden Beinen auf dem Boden des industriellen Arbeitslebens stehende „Blaskapelle“. Meine zuvor beschriebenen Anfänge sind jetzt 50 Jahre her und inzwischen ist im Cluster Smart Logistik auf dem RWTH Aachen Campus ein beeindruckendes, stetig wachsendes Forschungscluster entstanden, das unter der Leitung des FIR steht. Forschen und beraten, Wissenschaft und Industrie, das waren und sind die Grundpfeiler der Arbeit am FIR und das ist es, was mich auch heute noch motiviert, diese Arbeit beratend zu begleiten. Forschung und Praxis kommen nur durch intensives „Sich- miteinander-Austauschen“, durch Kommunikation, zusammen. Hier ist das FIR durch seine vielfältigen Aktivitäten, diesen Austausch zu fördern, in den letzten 20 Jahren in eine neue Dimension hineingewachsen. Eine der Keimzellen dafür ist die Zeitschrift UdZ „Unternehmen der Zukunft“, deren beide Ausgaben UdZForschung und UdZPraxis bisher schwerpunktartig die Tätigkeitsfelder des FIR beleuchteten. Die aktuelle Entwicklung – das Zusammenführen beider Zeitschriften und die nunmehr zweisprachige Erscheinungs- weise – begrüße ich außerordentlich, denn damit kommt die untrennbare Verbundenheit von Forschung und Praxis am FIR , und dies immer stärker auch im internationalen Kontext, noch besser zum Ausdruck. Der Erfahrungsaustausch und die Zusammenarbeit mit auf ähnlichem Gebiet arbeiten- den Forschungseinrichtungen gelingt nämlich nur im in- tensiven Austausch miteinander. So, wie sich die Industrie als Anwendungspartner des FIR mit Hilfe der englischen Sprache global vernetzt und kommuniziert, bauen auch eini- ge Forschungsstätten, mit denen das FIR zusammenarbeitet, auf diese Sprache als Kommunikationsbrücke auf. Die „neue“ ‚UdZ – The Data-driven Enterprise‘ schafft mit ihrer neu gestalte- ten Ausgabe die Voraussetzung, diesem Trend noch besser ge- recht zu werden. Glückwunsch zu diesem Schritt! Wolfgang Trommer Foreword I have had the privilege of being affiliated with FIR , the Research Institute for Industrial Management at RWTH Aachen University , since 1970 – that’s when I joined the institute as a student assistant. Back then, there were many aspects that made me enthusiastic about working at FIR , but probably the most important one was the practical relevance of the work that they do – FIR has always lived and breathed application-focused research. FIR was never just a “ symphony orchestra ” playing the harps in scientific heaven, but always also a “ brass band ” , with both feet firmly on the ground of industrial working life. It is now 50 years ago that I embarked on my journey with FIR ; in the meantime, with the Smart Logistics Cluster on RWTH Aachen Campus , an impressive, constantly growing research hub has emerged under the leadership of FIR . Research and consulting, science and industry – these were and are at the heart of FIR’s activities, and that is what motivates me today to continue to support their work in an advisory capacity. Research and practice only come together through an intensive exchange of ideas, through intense communication. In the last 20 years, by promoting this exchange with its extensive range of activities, FIR has reached another level. One of the drivers of this development has been the journal “UdZ – Companies of the Future” whose two editions, UdZForschung and UdZPraxis, each with its different focus, have highlighted FIR’s wide range of activities for many years. I very much welcome the decision of FIR to merge the two journals and to publish the new format in German and English – this underscores both the inseparable connection between researchandpracticeat FIR aswell as its increasingly international outlook. The exchange of experience and collaboration with research institutions working in similar fields can only come to fruition in an intense process of communication. Like most of FIR’s industry partners, which build networks and communicate globally with the help of the English language, some of the research institutions with which FIR collaborates are also using this lingua franca as a “communicative bridge”. With its newly designed format, the “new” ‘UdZ – The Data-Driven Enterprise‘, FIR has established a sound basis to realize the potential of this trend even better.
