UdZ 01.25 / 25 DRiVE: How Intelligent Route Planning is Advancing Climate-Friendly Road Freight Transport The future of road freight transport is expected to be emission-free – but haulage companies relying on alternative drive systems face a major challenge: despite inadequate charging and refueling infrastructure and long waiting times, they must meet delivery deadlines while competing with rivals who continue to use conventional vehicles. As a result, the transformation is stalling, even though the need for climate-friendly transportation solutions is more urgent than ever. In Germany, 85 percent of land-based transportation is conducted by road1. Given the German government's ambitious climate targets, a transition to alternative drive systems is therefore inevitable. However, without intelligent infrastructure, implementation remains challenging. This is precisely where the DRivE research project comes in. DRivE has developed a data-driven route planning system that facilitates the transition to alternative vehicle drives for logistics companies and paves the way for a sustainable future. > 1 see Statistisches Bundesamt 2025
