Figure 2). The user of the DSS is empowered to analyze the impact of changed parameters on environmental and economic targets in production in order to make decisions about the configuration of the parameters. This data-based decision support is realized by means of a discrete simulation model, which is the core component of the smart data layer. The aim of the smart data layer is to provide information about the impact of variations in production planning parameters on economic and, in particular, environmental production targets. The simulationmodel is designed specifically for the company and represents an abstraction of the real-world production system. The uniqueness of the simulation model is created by a company-specific interlinkage of generic process elements. The characteristics of the individual process elements, such as the energy consumption of a production process, result from the data of the proprietary application systems. The linkage and aggregation of the required data of the simulation model takes place within the Middelware+ layer, where information and data from the monolithic information systems are linked and aggregated to enable cross-domain decision support. This is done in the context of the DSS for a sustainable configuration of production planning parameters through a semantic data model. The data model describes the necessary information fromthe proprietary information systems and its interaction with the modular process elements of the simulation model. The lowest level of the DSS is the layer of expert systems, where data and information from various information
