UdZ 03.22 / 61 UdZ: Gerrit, how did you come to the FIR? Gerrit: My first contact with the FIR was when I participated in an international case competition at VWI (Verband Deutscher Wirtschaftsingenieure e. V.). Dr. Boris Feige, then Deputy Head of Business Transformation at the FIR and now COO at SMS digital GmbH, was on the jury. He convinced me and inspired me to apply to the FIR. A short time later, I joined the Business Transformation department as a research assistant and initially helped to set up the Design Thinking department. Relatively quickly, I also came into contact with future topics such as “Metropolitan Cities” and “Sustainable Transportation Systems.” UdZ: What was the deciding factor after your studies to start your career at the FIR? Gerrit: After completing my master's degree, I was faced with the decision: “Which path do I take? Large corporation, consulting, PhD?” For me, it was not primarily a question of topics, but of culture in leadership and collaboration. Here at the FIR, people work at eye level. That appealed to me back then and still does today. Just like the freedom for your own ideas and the enormous appreciation you experience here. The feeling of being part of an open, creative team in which there is no “pecking order” and in which I can develop freely and realize my goals not only impressed me, but definitely convinced me to shape my career together with the FIR. UdZ: So it's fair to say that you made the right decision with the FIR? Gerrit: Definitely, and here, besides the freedom, the variety of topics is also the cool thing. I realized during my studies that a technical deep-dive into a specific topic was not enough for me in the long run. I preferred to look at a wide variety of topics from different angles. This versatility is advantageous, also with regard to solving societal and social issues, and I particularly enjoy it. UdZ: What role does the doctorate play for you? Gerrit: The PhD shows that I am able to define a complex problem, describe it and break it down into the components that lead to the solution, and then solve it. The important thing is to keep at it, to motivate yourself every time, even in the face of setbacks. Continuity in working out the solution is a hallmark of a dissertation that should not be underestimated. I therefore believe that it is still of central relevance and is also valued accordingly. The only thing that has changed is the UdZ: Gerrit, wie bist Du ans FIR gekommen? Gerrit: Den ersten Kontakt zum FIR hatte ich bei der Teilnahme an einer internationalen Case-Competition beim VWI (Verband Deutscher Wirtschaftsingenieure e. V.). Dr. Boris Feige, damals stellvertretender Bereichsleiter Business Transformation am FIR und heute COO bei der SMS digital GmbH, saß in der Jury. Er hat mich überzeugt und für eine Bewerbung am FIR begeistert. Kurze Zeit später stieg ich als Wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft im Bereich Business Transformation ein und baute dort zunächst das Design-Thinking mit auf. Relativ schnell kam ich dann auch in Berührung mit Zukunftsthemen wie „Metropolitan Cities“ und „Nachhaltige Verkehrssysteme.“ UdZ: Was war nach Deinem Studium ausschlaggebend dafür, Deine Karriere am FIR zu starten? Gerrit: Nach Abschluss meines Masterstudiums stand ich vor der Entscheidung: „Welchen Weg gehe ich? Großkonzern, Beratung, Promotion?“ Für mich war das nicht in erster Linie eine Frage von Themen, sondern von Kultur in Führung und Zusammenarbeit. Hier am FIR arbeitet man auf Augenhöhe. Das hat mich schon damals besonders angesprochen und tut es heute noch. Ebenso wie der Freiraum für eigene Ideen und die enorme Wertschätzung, die man hier erfährt. Das Gefühl, Teil eines offenen, kreativen Teams zu sein, in dem es keine „Hackordnung“ gibt und in dem ichmich frei entwickeln undmeine Ziele verwirklichen kann, hat mich nicht nur beeindruckt, sondern definitiv davon überzeugt, meine Karriere gemeinsam mit dem FIR zu gestalten. UdZ: Man kann also sagen, dass Du mit dem FIR die richtige Entscheidung getroffen hast? Gerrit: Auf jeden Fall, und hier ist neben dem Freiraum auch die Themenvielfalt das Coole. Ich habe im Studium gemerkt, dass ein technischer Deep-Dive in ein bestimmtes Thema mir auf Dauer nicht ausreicht. Ich wollte lieber unterschiedlichste Themen immer wieder von verschiedenen Seiten beleuchten. Diese Vielseitigkeit ist vorteilhaft, auch im Hinblick auf das Lösen von gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Fragestellungen, und macht mir besonders Spaß. UdZ: Welche Rolle spielt die Promotion für Dich? Gerrit: Die Promotion zeigt, dass ich in der Lage bin, ein komplexes Problem zu definieren, es zu beschreiben und in die Bestandteile herunterzubrechen, die zur Lösung
