SPECTRUM – APPLIED RESEARCH 58 / UdZ 01.23 Business Models in Transition Digital transformation is forcing companies across all industries to rethink their business models. The automotive industry, which has been conservative in its approach to date, is particularly affected by this transformation. For example, optionally bookable digital services such as an electronic driver's logbook or various smart control services are ushering in a new era in the automotive industry, shifting the focus from the automobile as such to the users and their individual mobility needs. Automobile manufacturers must therefore move away from their product-centric focus and adapt their business models to the changing customer demand for mobility solutions by offering new digital services2. On the one hand, this development promises great revenue potential for those companies that effectively exploit the emerging market dynamics. On the other hand, it simultaneously increases the pressure to innovate and thus harbors the risk that existing players will be driven out of the market due to a lack of capital or know-how. In order to counteract this problem, five institutions distributed throughout Germany have joined forces to launch the DiSerHub research project, which aims to secure the competitiveness of the German automotive sector through a targeted transfer of knowledge and the networking of various players. DiSerHub is developing a transformation hub that addresses specific knowledge gaps on digital business models and supports companies in the automotive industry ecosystem in their transition from product supplier to solution provider by documenting and disseminating best practices. DiSerHub considers all four phases of the product life cycle of a car: production, distribution, usage, and recovery (see figure 1). Bild 1).
