PlattformHybrid

Design of a hybrid business model including the possibilities of digital platforms for the SME of mechanical engineering

The research goal is the development of a procedure for the establishment of hybrid business models including the possibilities of digital platforms for the SME of industrial engineering.

The research goal is the development of a procedure for the establishment of hybrid business models including the possibilities of digital platforms for the SME of industrial engineering.

Solution

Based on a potential analysis for the foundation of or integration into an existing digital platform (AP1) patterns for hybrid business models are designed (AP2). Depending on the results of the potential analysis and the underlying business model patterns a strategy-compliant organizational structure will be identified by applying an ecosystem analysis (AP3). After that  concrete measures for scaling the hybrid business model or the digital platform will be developed (AP4). The project concludes with the development of the implementation roadmap (AP5), which summarizes the results of the project. AP6 serves transfer and project management.

Results

The project aims at five concrete results:

  1. Development of a selection assessment with decision matrix and preference weighting for decision support with regard to the foundation of or integration into an existing digital platform.
  2. Development of hybrid business model patterns based on previously preferred products and services
  3. Determination of the necessary organisational adjustments through an ecosystem analysis
  4. Identification of suitable scaling measures for digital platforms
  5. Development of a validated roadmapping procedure

The project enables SMEs in industrial engineering to exploit the potential of platform economics for their own companies by analysing their own corporate strategy and the underlying product and service portfolio. These are, for example, the increase in turnover through new customers and customer groups, the increase in turnover through new price and revenue models, the scalability of digital products and services and the streamlining of procurement.
