Dissemination of 5G potentials for NRW

The projected Competence Center 5G.NRW will assume the central driving function in North Rhine-Westphalia's development into the lead market for 5G and will act via the three following force vectors: the technical entry barriers for companies will be reduced, the economic potential for the vertical markets will be developed and the innovation diffusion - "5G and beyond" - will be accelerated. As a central contact point, the 5G.NRW Competence Center will be easily available to all players with an integrated package of measures.

Initial situation

The future competitiveness of the economy in North Rhine-Westphalia depends in particular on whether the potential of the key technology 5G can be realised as quickly as possible, harnessed for digital transformation and translated into new business models. 5G is a key technology of digital transformation and forms the basis for a new innovation boost. For the increasing industrial digitization, 5G will realize the required quality, speed and capacity of networking and data transmission.

Solution approach

The projected Competence Center 5G.NRW focuses its activities in six work packages in which the focal points are further developed together with the 5G actors in NRW:

Technology monitoring "5G and beyond"
Research accompanying the planned initiative "5G test fields"
Experimental platforms and demonstration laboratories
Transfer
Network
Communication and project management

This also includes a continuous discussion with representatives of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitisation and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia (MWIDE) and other relevant political institutions.

Expected Result

The projected Competence Center 5G.NRW is intended to offer a platform in which both industry-specific potentials of 5G technology can be exchanged and also an overarching platform, especially when these potentials can not only be tapped by individual companies but also require cooperation.

Benefits for the target group

The planned project strengthens and accelerates the diffusion of knowledge: The networking of 5G users with telecommunications companies as well as the networking of 5G users with each other.
