Development and measurement of the digitisation of the economy in Germany

Provision of an evidence-based orientation framework for politics and business

The aim of the research project "Development and measurement of the digitisation of the economy in Germany" is to measure the digitisation of the economy in Germany in its complexity and to observe it over time.

Initial situation

Rapid technological development has led to a wide range of digital technologies and solutions. Not least due to an increased understanding in economy and society, the number of possible applications is also growing.

Solution approach

  • Modul 1: Index "Digitization of the German Economy"
An index to empirically measure the digitisation of the German economy is being developed - differentiated according to company size and sector. In the course of the index creation a representative company survey will be conducted to capture digitisation at company level.
  • Modul 2: Artificial intelligence
A special focus is devoted to artificial intelligence as an important "enabler" of future economic development.
  • Modul 3: Analyses of productivity effects of digitisation
The productivity effects associated with digitisation are mainly analysed using econometric methods.
  • Modul 4: Regional aspects
The results of the index from Module 1 are broken down by region and presented.
  • Modul 5: Case studies
Current developments are taken up with annually changing focal themes on the digitisation of the economy.
  • Modul 6: ICT sector picture
The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector as a provider of digital technologies and solutions is analysed in depth.
  • Modul 7: Transfer of results
All results, analysis steps and methods will be presented to the public on a website (planned start: September 2020) in order to initiate a broad discussion on the digitisation of the German economy.

Expected result and benefits for the target group

The work results of the respective project modules provide both industry and politics with an evidence-based orientation framework for their decisions.
